Walentyn Kostjantynowytsch Symonenko (born July 4, 1940 in Odessa ) is a Ukrainian civil engineer and politician . From October 2 to 13, 1992, he was the acting Prime Minister of Ukraine .

Walentyn Symonenko comes from an Odessa working class family. In 1962 he completed his studies at the Odessa Institute of Civil Engineering and then worked as a construction manager on the construction site of the Kiev hydropower plant (see also Kiev Sea ). 1963 to 1965 he worked as a civil engineer at the institute "Ukrdiprogidpolis" in Odessa. Until 1973 he then worked in various factories for reinforced concrete structures. In the 1970s, he moved his full-time activity to the organs of the Odessa organization of the Communist Party of the Ukrainian SSR . In the 1980s he was chairman of the executive committee of the Odessa city parliament.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992 he was initially representative of the President of the now independent Ukraine in Odessa Oblast . In July 1992 he moved to the capital Kiev as the first deputy prime minister . After the resignation of Prime Minister Witold Fokin , Walentyn Symonenko acted provisionally as head of government in October 1992 until Leonid Kuchma took office.

Honors

On December 3, 2009 Symonenko received the title Hero of Ukraine in connection with the Order of the State Prize. On September 15, 2006 he received the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, 5th class. On July 6, 1999 he received the Ukrainian Order of Merit 2nd Class and in 2004 the Order of Merit 1st Class. He was awarded the Order of Friendship of the Russian Federation on November 5, 2009. Furthermore, he has been the holder of the Red Banner Order of Labor since 1976 and the Order of Friendship between Nations and other honors since 1981 .
