Osorkon III. was a pharaoh (king) in ancient Egypt of the 23rd Dynasty ( third intermediate period ). His reign is from about 799 to 771 BC. To apply. Osorkon III. is, according to DA Aston and Jürgen von Beckerath, identical to Prince Osorkon as the high priest of Amun .

Osorkon, son of Takelot II and, with interruptions, high priest of Amun in Thebes , was appointed high priest in the eleventh year of his father's reign on 21 Achet IV (beginning of July). This was preceded by the successful military conquest of Thebes. His appointment as high priest caused simmering conflicts with the high priest Harsiese II , which ultimately culminated in a civil war .

In the eleventh year of his father Takelot II's reign, the celebration of the Amun Re festival on the 11th Schemu I in Thebes is documented. In the 25th and 29th year of Scheschonq III. Osorkon returned as high priest with military advances to Thebes, which he could only keep briefly. After ten years of absence Osorkon came as high priest in the 39th year of the reign of Scheschonq III. militarily back to Thebes and a little later ascended the throne.

Osorkon as Pharaoh
