The high priest of Amun (also high priest of Amun , in Egyptian: Hem-netjer-tepi-en-Amun ( Ḥm-nṯr-tpj-n-Jmn ) translated as: "first servant / priest of Amun") was an important religious office in ancient Egypt . The office has been attested since the beginning of the 18th Dynasty ( New Kingdom ). The incumbents resided in Thebes . Especially at the end of the New Kingdom and in the Third Intermediate Period, these priests held significant economic and political power. In the 21st Dynasty they were the practical rulers of Upper Egypt and held numerous secular and religious titles. In the later period the office lost its importance.
