Proper name |
(Sa Amun Heri Hor) S3 Jmn Ḥrj Ḥr A leader is Horus , son of Amun |
Herihor was the son-in-law of Pianch , his successor as high priest of Amun in Thebes and officiated during the late 20th to the beginning of the 21st dynasty ( Third Intermediate Period ) around 1076 to 1066 BC. Chr.
Herihor was presumably a general of Libyan origin and during his reign he carried the titles of High Priest of Thebes, Supreme Army Commander and Viceroy of Kush . Like his predecessor, he resided in Thebes and ruled Upper Egypt and Nubia , while the actual Pharaoh Ramses XI. controlled only Memphis and Middle Egypt and Smendes I of Tanis from Lower Egypt.
Because of his great power, Herihor saw himself as being on an equal footing with the king and therefore had name cartouches made, which are located in the peristyle of the Chons temple in Karnak .
