Wassyl Jaroslawowytsch Slipak ( Ukrainian Василь Ярославович Сліпак ; born December 20, 1974 in Lviv , Ukrainian SSR ; † June 29, 2016 in Luhanske , Bachmut district , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian opera singer ( baritone ).

Life

Wassyl Slipak completed his education at the Lyssenko Music Academy in Lviv in 1997 and then lived in France until he returned to Ukraine in 2014. There he worked as a soloist at the Paris National Opera and at the Bastille Opera House in Paris .

In 2011 he won the award for the best male performer at the Armel Opera Festival in Szeged, Hungary for his rendering of death in Viktor Ullmann's opera The Emperor of Atlantis .

With the Euromaidan he returned to Ukraine and took an active part in events on the Majdan in Kiev and in benefit concerts. From 2015 he volunteered in the fighting in eastern Ukraine . He was shot by a sniper during an attack in the Luhanske - Debaltseve region on June 29, 2016 at around 6 a.m. He was buried on July 1, 2016 in the Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv.

Honors

The Patriarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church - Kiev Patriarchate , Filaret Denyssenko , he was the medal in September 2015 for the victims and the love for Ukraine awarded. Ukrainian medal for bravery he was awarded posthumously on 30 June 2016 and was on 20 February 2017 for his extraordinary courage and heroism in the defense of national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine by the President of Ukraine posthumously the highest honorary title of Ukraine " Held of Ukraine ”.
