Mikhail Michajlawitsch Schysneuski ( Belarusian Міхаіл Міхайлавіч Жызнеўскі ; born January 26, 1988 in Homel , BSSR ; † January 22, 2014 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Belarusian journalist and political activist. Along with Sergei Nigojan, of Armenian descent, he was one of the Euromaidan's first victims .

Life

Schysneuski was born in Homel on January 26, 1988 . On September 11, 2005 , he moved to Bila Tserkva near Kiev . He was a member of the Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reforms and an activist of the far right UNA-UNSO .

Schysneuski took part in the Euromaidan protests and was gunned down on January 22, 2014 in Hrushevskoho Street in Kiev . He was one of the first victims of the Euromaidan, along with Sergei Nigojan, of Armenian origin. Schysneuski was buried in the village of Szjag Prazy in Gomel district .

Honors

Schynewski was awarded the title "Hero of the Heavenly Hundred" by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on November 28, 2014 , and on June 13, 2017, he was the first foreigner to posthumously receive the title Hero of Ukraine . A memorial was erected in his honor on Hrushevskohostrasse in Kiev . A street was named after him in the town of Owrutsch .
