Ivan Oleksandrowytsch Wakarchuk ( Ukrainian Іван Олександрович Вакарчук ; born March 6, 1947 in Brătuşeni near Edineț , Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic ; † April 4, 2020 in Lviv ) was a Ukrainian physicist , university rector and politician .

Life

The doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, professor and author of more than 300 scientific publications, Ivan Wakarchuk was Rector of the Ivan Franko National University in Lviv from 1990 to 2007 and again from 2010 to 2013 .

Between 2001 and 2004, Vakarchuk was President of the Ukrainian Physical Society.

In Tymoshenko's second cabinet , the non-partisan Vakarchuk was Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine between December 18, 2007 and March 11, 2010 . He died in Lviv at the age of 73 and is buried in the Lychakiv Cemetery .

family

Wakarchuk was married to his wife, Switlana, born in 1947, and was the father of Svyatoslaw Wakarchuk , a well-known singer, songwriter and social activist.
