Svyatoslaw Ivanovych Wakarchuk ( Ukrainian Святосла́в Іва́нович Вакарчу́к ; born May 14, 1975 in Mukachevo , Transcarpathian Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian singer , songwriter and social activist. He is the founder of the Ukrainian political party Voice (Ukrainian Голос Holos ), which moved into the Verkhovna Rada after the 2019 general election.

Life

Svyatoslaw Wakarchuk (nickname "Slava") is the lead singer of the internationally successful Ukrainian rock band Okean Elsy , founded in Lviv in 1994 , for which he also writes most of the songs and lyrics in his native Ukrainian. He is also fluent in Russian , Polish and English .

After his involvement in the Orange Revolution in which he gave concerts with Ruslana Lyschytschko on the Majdan Nezaleschnosti in support of Viktor Yushchenko , from 2007 onwards, Wakarchuk was an independent member of the Verkhovna Rada , the Ukrainian parliament, which he had already entered in 2008 out of disappointment with the ruling political regime System left again.

Wakarchuk studied theoretical physics at the Faculty of Physics at Lviv University from 1991 to 1996 and has been a doctor of physics since 2009. He is also the Ukrainian cultural ambassador and ambassador of goodwill (Goodwill Global Ambassadors) of the United Nations . In 2005, Vakarchuk became the first million hryvnia winner of the Ukrainian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and donated the profits to orphanages in Ukraine.

During the Euromaidan 2013/14, Wakarchuk stood up for the pro-Western opposition in Ukraine and for his friend Vitali Klitschko , which is why he was described by some Russian politicians as an “enemy of Russian society” and a “nationalist”.

Wakarchuk returned to politics in 2019 and, after the parliamentary elections in 2019 , became a member of the Ukrainian parliament with his own party “ vote ”.

Wakarchuk is the son of Ivan Wakarchuk , a Ukrainian scientist who was Rector of the Ivan Franko National University in Lviv and Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, and his wife, Switlana. Svyatoslaw Wakarchuk has been married to the designer and stylist Ljalja (Laryssa) Fonarjowa since 2007, has a daughter (Diana) and lives in Kiev.
