Borys Olijnyk
Borys Illitsch Olijnyk ( Ukrainian Борис Ілліч Олійник ; born October 22, 1935 in Satschepyliwka , Poltava Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ; † April 30, 2017 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian poet , translator , politician and a public figure. Borys Olijnyk was one of the most influential Ukrainian artists of the second half of the twentieth century.
Life
Borys Olijnyk comes from a rural family in Poltava Oblast and studied from 1953 to 1958 at the Faculty of Journalism at the Taras Shevchenko National University in Kiev . In 1958 he was department head at the newspaper "Jugend der Ukraine" and from 1962 to 1973 he was an editor at the magazine "Ранок" (German: "Morgen"). From 1971 to 1974 Olijnyk was deputy chairman of the Writers ' Union of Ukraine and from 1976 to 1991 he was secretary of the Writers' Union of Ukraine and the USSR . He was also a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and from 1980 to 1991 a member of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR.
From 1992 to 1994 Olijnyk was an independent MP of the Verkhovna Rada and from 1994 to 2006 he was a member of the Ukrainian Parliament for the Communist Party of Ukraine . With the electoral bloc Borys Olijnyk and Mychajlo Syrota , he entered the list at number 1 in the parliamentary elections in Ukraine in 2006 , but failed at the 3% hurdle.
Olijnyk is the author of more than 40 books, a member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine , an honorary member of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine , a board member of the National Ethnographers Association of Ukraine , the President of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation and the Chairman of the Committee for the National Prize of Ukraine .
Borys Olijnyk was married and had one son.
He died on April 30, 2017 at 11:45 am at the age of 81 after a long and serious illness in Kiev and will be buried there on May 3, 2017 in the Baikowe cemetery .
Works
Olijnyk wrote more than 40 books of poetry, essays and articles in Ukrainian , many of which have been translated into other languages.
