Life

Ignatenko was born in the village of Spjaryschscha ( Спярыжжа ) in the Brahin district of the Belarusian Homelskaya Woblasz .

After graduating from the vocational school for radio technology in Homel , he first worked in Babrujsk and after some time was drafted into the Soviet Army , where he served in the fire department in Moscow. After completing his military service, he wanted to join the fire department in Chernihiv , but was not hired and therefore became a firefighter in the Ukrainian city of Pripyat .

There he, as the commander of the department of the 6th independent paramilitary fire brigade for the protection of the city of Pripyat, was on guard duty on April 26, 1986 and was responsible for the fourth reactor block of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant . When the fire started at the nuclear power plant, he was one of the first to walk into the radioactive fire. When he arrived at the nuclear power plant at 1:35 a.m. , he organized the personnel for the operation. He himself worked at great heights, in high temperatures and in heavy smoke, with which he served as an example for his team.

During this mission he received a high dose of radiation, which is why he was admitted to the sixth clinic of the Moscow Institute of Biophysics on April 27. He suffered from an extremely severe degree of radiation sickness , which is why a bone marrow transplant was performed on May 2, but it was unsuccessful. He died in Moscow at the age of 25 and, like his five Ukrainian comrades who were on duty with him and who also died, was buried in the Mitinskoye cemetery ( Митинское кладбище ) in Moscow. The internal sergeant major and sports master of the USSR left a pregnant woman.

reception

Ignatenko's widow Lyudmila Ignatenko told his story to the Nobel Prize winner Svetlana Alexievich , who wrote this in her book “ Chernobyl. A Chronicle of the Future ”processed. This served the Luxembourg director Pol Cruchten in 2016 as the basis for a documentary film. Ignatenko's last days of life were also thematized in the television series Chernobyl , in which Wassili Ignatenko is portrayed by Adam Nagaitis and Lyudmila Ignatenko by Jessie Buckley .
