Viktor Wassylowytsch Skopenko (born December 18, 1935 Novhorodka , Ukrainian SSR , † July 5, 2010 in Kiev ) was a Ukrainian chemist and university rector .

Life

Viktor Skopenko was born as the son of the teacher and later hero of the Soviet Union Vasyl Fedorowytsch Skopenko (1912–1945) in Novhorodka , Kirowohrad Oblast . He graduated from high school in Kiev and then studied chemistry from 1953 to 1958 at the Taras Shevchenko National University . Between 1959 and 1962 he did his doctorate in chemistry at the same university and then began working as an assistant at the chair for inorganic chemistry at the University of Kiev. 1966 was appointed deputy dean of the chemistry faculty and in 1972 he became professor. From 1985 to 2008 he was rector of the Taras Shevchenko National University.

From 1992 Skopenko was a member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine and since 1998 a member of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine . In 1993 he became President of the Union of Rectors of Universities of Ukraine.

The author of over 400 scientific papers, including 15 monographs and textbooks, died in Kiev and was buried in the local Baikowe cemetery .
