Evgeny Paton , usual: EO Paton ( Ukrainian Євген Оскарович Патон Yevhen Oskarowytsch Paton , scientific. Transliteration Evhen Oskarovyč Paton ; English transcription: Evgeny Oscarovich Paton * 5. March 1870 in Nice , France ; † 12. July 1953 in Kiev ) was a Soviet scientist, inventor of arc welding and bridge construction engineer . He is the father of the Ukrainian scientist Borys Paton .

Life

Paton was born in Nice to a Russian diplomatic family. He graduated in 1894 from the Technical University in Dresden and in 1896 from the St. Petersburg Institute for Railways. Yevgeny O. Paton was professor at the Railway Engineering School in Moscow (1899-1904) and at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute (KPI) (1904-1938) and from 1945 to 1952 Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He wrote more than 160 scientific papers in connection with bridge building and the construction of bridges and 200 papers on welding technology.

In 1929 he founded an Institute for Welding Technology (PWI) in Kiev, which was merged in 1934 in the Institute for Electrofusion of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR . In 1945 the institute was expanded to include his name. Paton was director of the PWI until his death. The "EO Paton Electric Welding Institute" is still the world's most renowned institution for welding technology.

Paton invented a method ("Paton method") of electric welding and thereby became a world-renowned expert on steel bridges. His welding method was also used in the production of the Soviet T-34 tank.

Four months after his death, the Paton Bridge , a 1.5 km long steel bridge over the Dnepr in Kiev, was inaugurated in 1953 , which was planned and built according to his information.

Paton's grave is in the Baikowe Cemetery in Kiev.
