Career
Tomi Mäki started his career as a hockey player at the age of six in his hometown in the youth department of Jokerit Helsinki . In the 2001 NHL Entry Draft , the Calgary Flames selected a total of 108th place , but initially stayed with Jokerit and continued to play for the club's A-Juniors. He had previously signed a two-year contract with Jokerit in April 2001.
During the 2001/02 season Mäki made his debut for the professional team of the Joker in the SM-liiga , but also received inserts in the second-rate Mestis at Kiekko-Vantaa . In the 2002/03 season Mäki played in 18 regular season and one playoff game and collected a total of four scorer points, two of which were goals and assists. He scored his first SM-liiga goal on November 17, 2002 against Tappara . Most of the season he played again for the club's A-Juniors, with whom he won second place in the Finnish U20 championship in spring 2003.
In the following 2003/04 season, the center was a regular at Jokerit, completed 50 games in the main round and 8 playoff games, in which he collected a total of 10 points scorer. With his team he was runner- up in the 2004/05 season, when it was only defeated in the playoff final Kärpät Oulu . Mäki still had a contract with the Jokers for the 2005/06 season, but switched to a two-year contract with the organization of the Calgary Flames, who had held his NHL transfer rights since 2001. For the next two years he played almost exclusively for the Flames' farm team , Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights , in the American Hockey League . For his only use for Calgary in the National Hockey League , he came on December 12, 2006 in the game against the Minnesota Wild .
In July 2007 he signed a one-year contract extension with the Flames, but was only used for the new farm team, the Quad City Flames , in the 2007/08 season .
In the summer of 2008, Mäki returned to his hometown club Jokerit Helsinki and received a two-year contract. Two years later, Mäki received a two-year contract extension. In 2010 he also took part in the European Trophy with Jokerit . In the 2010/11 season he scored 12 goals in 60 main round games, which was a new personal record for them. In the 2011/12 season, Mäki set a personal season record for the Finnish SM-liiga when he collected 8 goals, 13 assists and 21 points scorer. Jokerit finished third in the Finnish championship in 2012. Mäki had previously signed a contract extension for three years (until 2015) in December 2011.
In the summer of 2014 Jokerit left the Finnish championship and was accepted into the Continental Hockey League . Mäki also played with Jokerit at the Spengler Cup in 2015 and 2016 . He was injured during the 2015/16 season and only played 29 games in the regular season.
In the spring of 2016, Mäki signed another extension contract for two years with his home club, and in the spring of 2018 an extension for another year. During the 2018/2019 season, Mäki played a subordinate role in the team and only played 24 regular season games. On December 2, 2018, he overtook Jani Rita in these club-internal statistics with 618 main round games for Jokerit .
The Finn ended his active career in summer 2019. He took over a coaching position in the youth division of Jokerit. With 628 competitive appearances in the regular season, he holds the record in this category at Jokerit.
