Denis Jean Hamel (born May 10, 1977 in Lachute , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 192 games for the Buffalo Sabers , Ottawa Senators , Atlanta Thrashers and Philadelphia Flyers in the National between 1994 and 2015 Hockey League on the position of the left winger . However, Hamel spent most of his career in the American Hockey League , where he played over 900 other games for the Rochester Americans, Binghamton Senators and Adirondack Phantoms .
Career
Hamel spent his junior years between 1994 and 1997 in his home province of Québec , where the striker played for the Saguenéens de Chicoutimi in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ). Even in his rookie season , Hamel proved to be a reliable scorer with 29 points , which earned him the election to the league's all-rookie team. In the subsequent NHL Entry Draft in 1995 he was selected in the sixth round in 153rd place by the St. Louis Blues from the National Hockey League . However, the attacker remained in the junior division for two more years and rose to 113 and then 125 points in the service of the Saguenéens. In his third and final year he reached the final of the Coupe du Président with Chicoutimi , where the team was defeated by the Remparts de Québec . Due to the fact that the Remparts, as champions of the LHJMQ, were also the organizers of the prestigious Memorial Cup , the Saguenéens de Chicoutimi moved up as finalists of the LHJMQ in the same. There they finished fourth and last place without a win.
For the 1997/98 season , the now 20-year-old moved into the professional field, where he signed a contract with the Buffalo Sabers , which acquired him in a transfer in exchange for Charlie Huddy and a seven-round vote in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft in March 1996 had. However, the Canadian spent his first three years with the professionals exclusively in Buffalo's farm team , the Rochester Americans , in the American Hockey League . It was only in the course of the 1999/2000 season that Hamel made his debut for the Sabers in the NHL, when he was used in three games. At the beginning of the 2000/01 game year , the offensive player finally received an NHL squad place in Buffalo, but did not play any more games this season from January 2001 due to a knee injury. He did not return to the ice until the following season and established himself as a regular player by summer 2003. After his expiring contract was not extended, he moved in July 2003 as a free agent in the Canadian capital to the Ottawa Senators . Before he appeared for the team, however, he was drawn in early October 2003 in the NHL Waiver Draft by the Washington Capitals , who returned him to the Sens after two days in exchange for a nine- round vote in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft .
With the Senators, Hamel found himself in the episode mainly with the farm team Binghamton Senators in the AHL. With the exception of 52 NHL appearances for Ottawa between 2003 and 2007 and ten appearances for the Atlanta Thrashers and Philadelphia Flyers in the 2006/07 season , the winger played exclusively for the cooperation partner in Binghamton until the end of the 2009/10 season . There he subsequently set numerous franchise records, including the one for most games (438), goals (203), assists (189) and points (392). He also participated as a member of the team in 2006 and 2008 in the AHL All-Star Classic , which he had contested for the first time in 2000, and was a member of the AHL First All-Star Team in 2004 . In the 2005/06 season , in which he first appeared as team captain of the Binghamton Senators, he received the Willie Marshall Award with Donald MacLean of the Grand Rapids Griffins because of his 56 goals this season , and two years later he was Received the Yanick Dupré Memorial Award for his social commitment .
After the 2009-10 season, Hamel received no further contract in the Organization of the Ottawa Senators, after initially settling in the Ligue Nord-Americaine de Hockey (LNAH) at the Marquis de Saguenay , kept fit but soon a trial contract with the Adirondack Phantoms of the AHL received. Finally, the striker received a full contract and was active for the Phantoms until the summer of 2012. After a total of 15 seasons in the AHL and NHL, Hamel ended his career in the LNAH in autumn 2012. He first spent two years with the Marquis de Jonquière , with whom he each won the Coupe Canam , the league's championship trophy . After a year break, he went on the ice again briefly for league rivals Prédateurs de Laval in 2015 , before declaring his career over at the age of 38.
