Charline Van Snick

Charline Van Snick (born September 2, 1990 in Liège ) is a Belgian judoka . She was Olympic third in 2012 and European champion in 2015 and 2016.

Athletic career

The 1.57 m tall Charline Van Snick started in the super light weight category until 2016, in the weight class up to 48 kilograms. In 2008 she was third in the European Junior Championships, in 2009 she won the title. In 2009 she finished fifth at the Junior World Championships. At the beginning of 2010 she won her first World Cup in Sofia. At the 2010 European Judo Championships she lost to Romania's Alina Alexandra Dumitru in the quarter-finals , with victories over Britain's Kelly Edwards and Russian Lyudmila Bogdanova in the hope round , the Belgian won the bronze medal. In 2011 Van Snick finished fifth at the World Championships . At the end of 2011 she won the Belgian national championship title. In 2012 she reached the final at the European Championships in Chelyabinsk and won the silver medal behind Alina Alexandra Dumitru. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, she lost to the Brazilian Sarah Menezes in the semifinals , while Van Snick secured an Olympic bronze medal by defeating the Argentinian Paula Pareto .

In 2013, Charline Van Snick reached the final at the European Championships , just like in 2012, in the final in Budapest she lost to the Hungarian Éva Csernoviczki . At the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, the Belgian lost in the semi-finals to the Japanese Haruna Asami , in the battle for bronze she won against the Cuban Maria Celia Laborde . The 2015 European Championships were held as part of the 2015 European Games in Baku. Charline Van Snick won her four fights, in the final she defeated the Turkish Ebru Şahin . In 2016 she was able to defend her title at the European Championships in Kazan by beating Éva Csernoviczki in the final. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , the Belgian won her opening match against the Romanian Monica Ungureanu , but was eliminated in the round of 16 against Sarah Menezes.

At the end of 2016, Charline Van Snick switched to half-light weight, the weight class up to 52 kilograms. In October 2017 she won the Grand Slam tournament in Abu Dhabi in this weight class. She finished fifth at the 2018 World Championships .
