Carl Ferdinand Hernlund (born August 17, 1837 in Eksjö , Småland , Sweden ; † June 18, 1902 in Medevi , Östergötland , Sweden) was a Swedish landscape painter and illustrator .

Hernlund was the son of councilor Johan Anton Hernlund (1807-1875) and his wife Anna Christina Stigell-Ulmgren. He showed an early interest in art and began drawing vedutas of his hometown Eksjö as early as 1850 . There he worked as a drawing teacher in 1862. In 1863 he became a private student of Per Daniel Holm in Stockholm . When he stayed in Düsseldorf on a scholarship to study landscape painting at the Düsseldorf School , Hernlund went there too. He lived there in 1864/1865 and also took private lessons. Then he moved to Karlsruhe , where he lived in 1865/1866. He then settled in Stockholm as a landscape painter and illustrator. He took part in exhibitions with landscape paintings from Småland and Östergötland. From 1874 to 1875 he stayed in Munich for further studies . In 1875 he married Lisen Fredrika Maria Lundvall. In 1883 a study trip to France brought him into contact with the Barbizon School . In 1887, Hernlund became a member of the Stockholm Academy . From 1888 to 1898 he stayed in Linköping and then lived again in Stockholm.
