Career

Ólafur started his career with Fylkir Reykjavík in his hometown of Reykjavík. With the club he reached the runner-up in the first Icelandic league in 2000 .

In the summer of 2001, Ólafur moved to England for Arsenal FC . There he was only used in the reserve team, so that in early 2003 he was loaned back to Iceland to his old club Fylkir Reykjavík. Nevertheless, he established himself in the Icelandic U-21 national team, whose captain he was. After returning to England in the summer of that year, he was still unable to assert himself. Nevertheless, he made his A international debut in November that year in a 0-0 draw against the Mexican national team . A short time later, he also made his competitive debut on a club basis when coach Arsène Wenger used him as a substitute on December 2 of that year on the occasion of a game in the League Cup against Wolverhampton Wanderers . In the following season he was on the side of players like Cesc Fàbregas , Jermaine Pennant and Sebastian Larsson only in the reserve team.

After Ólafur was unable to assert himself in the Premier League and remained without first division use, he left Arsenal FC in the summer of 2005 for Brentford FC . He signed a two-year contract with the third-rate Football League One club. Shortly after his debut at the club, he seriously injured his knee and missed the rest of the season. Under coach Scott Fitzgerald , who was newly appointed in the summer of 2006 , he was no longer part of the regular team, so he decided to change clubs in December of that year.

In February 2007, Ólafur signed a three-year contract with the four-time Swedish champions Helsingborgs IF . In the 2007 season he was only able to play temporarily in the starting line-up and came to a total of 15 stakes. At the beginning of the following season he injured his cruciate ligament , after his return in August 2008 he injured his cruciate ligament again in September and fell out for a long time. In May 2009 he returned to the football field in the HIF U21 team. Two months later he ran again in the Allsvenskan and established himself in the defensive midfield. He then played for the clubs SønderjyskE Fodbold and SV Zulte Waregem .

For the 2015/16 season he moved to Turkey for the first division club Gençlerbirliği Ankara . After a season with the capital city, he and his two teammates Hakan Aslantaş and Iasmin Latovlevici were signed by the new league rivals Kardemir Karabükspor . In summer 2018 he returned to Fylkir Reykjavík.

In 2018 he was on the Icelandic squad for the World Cup in Russia, where Iceland was able to take part in a World Cup finals for the first time. After a draw with Argentina and defeats against Nigeria and Croatia, Iceland was eliminated as the last in Group D in the preliminary round; Ólafur was left without action.
