Obřany Castle

The ruins of Obřany Castle (German Castle Obřany / Obrzan ) is located in the Okres Brno-venkov in the Jihomoravský kraj region in the Czech Republic. It is located two kilometers northeast of Obřany above the Svitava valley . The area is part of today's Kanice cadastral area .

history

Obřany Castle was probably built after the middle of the 13th century by Gerhard von Zbraslav and Obřany on a hill east of the town of the same name Obřany . It is possible that the construction was already started by Gerhard's father Boček from Jaroslavice and Zbraslav . He had inherited the village of Obřany from his father-in-law Přibyslav von Křižanov in 1251 or had already received it as a marriage property from his wife. However, since he died four years after his father-in-law, he could not have finished building the castle. Since Gerhard von Zbraslav and Obřany was the first to use the title "von Obřany" ( z Obřan ) from 1278 , it is likely that he built the castle or completed it.

After Gerhard's death in 1291, the estates he left behind were inherited by his sons Boček († 1296) and Smil, with whom the direct line of the Lords of Obřany expired in 1312/13. Probably because Smil was one of the opponents of the Bohemian King John of Luxembourg during his lifetime , the king transferred Obřany castle and dominion to Heinrich von Leipa in 1313 . He had the Brno traders passing below the castle attacked and looted. Therefore, in 1315 or 1316 the castle was conquered and burned down by a Brno garrison. There was no more reconstruction.
