Jaroslav Otevřel (born September 16, 1968 in Gottwaldov , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player . During his career he played for AC ZPS Zlín and HC Dukla Trenčín in the Czechoslovak 1st league , the San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League and Ässät Pori in the Finnish SM-liiga .

Career

Otevřel first played in his home country in the Czechoslovak first division at AC ZPS Zlín from 1987 to 1992. These five years were only interrupted by a one-year commitment at HC Dukla Trenčín in the 1989/90 season. During this time, the Czech was selected in the seventh round in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft in 133rd place by the San Jose Sharks .

For the 1992/93 season Otevřel moved to North America and spent the following two seasons in the organization of the Sharks. Mainly he was used on their farm team in the International Hockey League , the Kansas City Blades . For the Sharks themselves, he only played 16 games, but scored seven points.

In the summer of 1994, the left winger moved to the Finnish SM-liiga , where he played for Ässät Pori . In his second season with the team in 1995/96 , Otevřel was seriously injured on February 11, 1996 when his team played against JYP Jyväskylä . After a player from the opposing team slipped, the Czech could no longer avoid him and fell so unhappy on the ice that he injured his neck. Since then he has been paralyzed from the waist down and has had to retire from active sports.
