The 1971/72 season of the first division was the 29th regular staging of the top ice hockey division in Czechoslovakia . The army sports club Dukla Jihlava prevailed with 48 points . For the team it was their sixth Czechoslovak championship title . The TJ Gottwaldov rose from bottom of the table in the second division, while the TJ Škoda Plzeň in the league qualification managed the direct promotion after a year of second division.

mode

As in the previous season, the league was played with ten teams. Since each team played two home and two away games against each group opponent, the total number of games per team was 36 games. Champion became the winner of the main round. The bottom of the table was relegated directly to the respective national championship. The playoffs held in the previous year were abolished.

The league's top scorer was Václav Nedomanský from Slovan CHZJD Bratislava, who scored 31 goals in his team's 36 games.

1st league qualification

The winners of the three second division groups, TJ Škoda Plzeň , VŽKG Ostrava / Vítkovice and ŠK Liptovský Mikuláš , as well as the group runner-up in group A Slavia Prague played in a round trip for admission to the first division for the following season. Škoda Plzeň prevailed with eight points. Slavia had moved up for the second in group A, the B team of Dukla Jihlava, as they were not eligible for promotion.
