Vladimír Országh (born May 24, 1977 in Banská Bystrica , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak ice hockey player and current coach, who worked for the New York Islanders , Nashville Predators and St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League was active. Most recently he was the head coach of HC Slovan Bratislava from the KHL in the 2018/19 season .

Career

As a player

Vladimír Országh began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth of SK Iskra Banská Bystrica , for whose professional team he made his debut in the second-rate first division in the 1994/95 season . He was also on the ice in his rookie year for MHC Martin in the extra league. With Banska Bystrica, the attacker rose to the extra league in 1995, whereupon he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2005 in the fifth round as a total of 106th player by the New York Islanders . Initially, however, the left-handed shooter played for his home club from Banska Bystrica in the Extraliga in the 1995/96 season, before he played for the New York farm team , the Utah Grizzlies from the International Hockey League , from 1996 to 1998 , with the Slovak in the season 1997/98 made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Islanders. From 1998 to 2000 Országh played again mainly in the American Hockey League, in which he was active for the new farm team of the Islanders.

After a year at Djurgården Hockey in the Swedish Elitserien Országh received on May 30, 2001 a contract as a free agent with the Nashville Predators , where he had a regular place in their NHL squad for the following three seasons. The 2002 world champion bridged the lockout during the 2004/05 season in his Slovak homeland, where he and HKm Zvolen lost to HC Slovan Bratislava in the final of the Slovak championship . The 2005/06 season began the former international at Luleå HF from the Swedish Elitserien, before he was signed on December 30, 2005 by the St. Louis Blues , for which he was on the ice in 16 games by the end of the season. Due to a knee injury Országh had to pause with ice hockey throughout the 2006/07 season, after which he retired from his career. During the 2007/08 season he tried a comeback at his home club, but only played one game.

During the 2009/10 season , he made another 14 appearances in the Slovak Extra League before finally ending his career in December 2009.

As a trainer

After his career ended, Országh was accepted into the coaching staff of HC 05 Banská Bystrica as an assistant coach. Between 2012 and 2014 he was head coach of the same team. At the same time, he was appointed to the coaching staff of the Slovak national team in 2013 , where he supported national coach Vladimír Vůjtek as an assistant coach.

In the 2014/15 season Országh belonged to the coaching team of HC Slovan Bratislava from the KHL . He then returned to HC 05 Banská Bystrica as head coach, with whom he won the Slovak championship title in 2017 and 2018. Because of these successes, he returned to Slovan Bratislava in 2018, but this time as head coach.

International

For Slovakia , Országh took part in the U20 Junior B World Championship in 1995 , as well as the World Championships in 2001 , 2002 , 2003 , 2004 and 2005 . He was also part of the Slovak squad at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey .
