Career
Scott Thornton began his career with the London Diamonds, a youth team in the Canadian province of Ontario , before moving to the Belleville Bulls in 1987 in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League . There he performed well as a defensive striker and was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1989 in the first round in position three by the Toronto Maple Leafs . He played the 1989/90 season, as well as three games of the 1990/91 season in the OHL, before moving to the National Hockey League in Toronto.
There he played 33 games for the Maple Leafs in his first year, but was then transferred to the Edmonton Oilers shortly before the 1991/92 season . In the following two years he was rarely used in the NHL and played mainly in the American Hockey League with the Cape Breton Oilers , the farm team of Edmonton. There he was able to develop and played an important role in winning the Calder Cup in 1993 as a hard-playing and defensive striker.
In 1993/94 Thornton finally made his breakthrough in the NHL and became a regular in Edmonton, where he was mainly called up in the checking line. The team did not have much sporting success and in September Thornton was transferred to the Montréal Canadiens .
He played for Montréal for three and a half years and was able to advance to the second round of the playoffs with the team in 1998 . In January 2000 the Canadiens transferred him to the Dallas Stars . The stars had won the Stanley Cup the year before and were among the top favorites as defending champions. And indeed they were able to reach the Stanley Cup final again, but were subject to the New Jersey Devils there .
Despite good performances by Scott Thornton, his contract was not renewed at the end of the season and he signed a contract with the San Jose Sharks , where he had his most successful time. In the 2000/01 season he achieved a personal best with 36 points, which he improved to 42 points the following year. Was the 2002/03 season marked by injuries, Thornton was one of the Sharks' key players in reaching the final of the 2003/04 Western Conference .
After the start of the 2004/05 NHL season was delayed because of the lockout and a cancellation of the season was in sight, Thornton signed a contract with Södertälje SK in the Swedish Elitserien .
The 2005/06 season he played again with the San Jose Sharks, but his contract was not renewed in the summer of 2006 and so he moved to the Los Angeles Kings , where he ended his career after two years at the age of 37.
