Mark Christopher Smith (* 24. October 1977 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player , who during his playing career from 1994 to 2008 among other 401 games for the San Jose Sharks and Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League of on the position Centers has denied.
In addition to his career as a hockey player, Smith is a passionate musician and member of the band The Vinyl Trees , which he supports with his salary, and has owned the Lunar Records label since 2004 .
Career
Smith played in his junior years with the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the Western Hockey League . After he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1997 in the ninth and final round in 219th place by the San Jose Sharks , he moved to the end of the 1997/98 season, when he failed early with the Hurricanes in the playoffs Kentucky Thoroughblades , the then farm team of the San Jose Sharks, in the American Hockey League to support them there in the playoffs.
This was followed by two full seasons with the Thoroughblades before he was ordered to San Jose during the 2000/01 season . There Smith convinced with his fast and active game. During the NHL lockout 2004/05 , the Canadian played in the ECHL , but returned the following year to the San Jose Sharks, where he set career records in the categories of games, goals, assists, points and penalty minutes. In the 2006/07 season Smith could only play half of the season games due to injury and his contract was not renewed in the summer of 2007. In September he received a trial contract with the New York Rangers , but could not prevail in the training camp. A little later he signed a contract with the Calgary Flames for the 2007/08 season . Since he missed the following season completely due to a concussion , he retired from his career at the age of 30.
