Karel Pilař (born December 23, 1977 in Prague , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player . In the National Hockey League he completed 102 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs . He also played for HC Sparta Prague and HC Litvínov in the Extraliga and HK CSKA Moscow in the Continental Hockey League .

Career

Karel Pilař began his career as a hockey player at HC Litvínov , for whom he was active in the Czech extra league from 1999 to 2001 . He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2001 in the second round as a total of 39th player from the Toronto Maple Leafs , for which he made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 2001/02 season . In his rookie year , the defender scored one goal in a total of 34 games and provided seven assists. Mostly, however, he played for their farm team from the American Hockey League , the St. John's Maple Leafs . In the following two years, the right-handed shooter was again in parallel for the Maple Leafs and their farm team on the ice, scoring 20 points in a total of 51 games in his first full season in the NHL in the 2003/04 season .

After three years in North America, Pilař returned to his Czech homeland in 2004, where he played for HC Sparta Prague in the Extraliga from 2004 to 2006 . With the capitals, the 2001 world champion won the Czech championship for the first time in the 2005/06 season . In the following season, as in previous years, he again missed a large part of the games due to heart problems. In the regular season he was in ten games for the new AHL farm team of the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Toronto Marlies , on the ice and scored seven points scorer. Then he was able to repeat the previous year's success in the Extraliga playoffs with Sparta Prague and became Czech champions for the second time.

On August 8, 2007 Pilař received a contract with the Atlanta Thrashers as a free agent . Without having played a game for the team, he was signed by the Chicago Blackhawks before the start of the season before he returned to Atlanta on October 2. Until the end of the season, the Czech ran exclusively for Atlanta's AHL farm team, the Chicago Wolves , with whom he won the Calder Cup . The 2008/09 season he began at HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk from the Continental Hockey League , for which he scored a goal in 24 games and gave five assists. In early January 2009 he returned to HC Sparta Prague, for which he played until the end of the season.

In October 2009 he returned to his home club in Litvínov . Via HK CSKA Moscow, for which he completed the 2010/11 season, he came to KHL newcomer HC Lev Poprad in July 2011 , where he initially received a trial contract and then played for the Växjö Lakers from January 2012 .

In late summer and autumn 2012 he played for HK Donbass Donetsk in the KHL before he was released in November 2012. He then returned to Sparta Prague and played there until the end of the 2014/15 season. He got a total of 29 scorer points in the 2013/14 season, making him the defender with the highest points in the Extraliga. In the 2015/16 season he played for Mountfield HK before he was signed by Anyang Halla from South Korea at the beginning of the following season . After a few games in the Asia League Ice Hockey , he left South Korea and returned to his home club.

In June 2018 he ended his career and became a player agent.
