Steve Andrew Rucchin (born July 4, 1971 in Thunder Bay , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player of Italian descent who played 772 games for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim , New York Rangers and Atlanta Thrashers between 1990 and 2007 has contested in the National Hockey League on the position of the center . Rucchin spent most of his career with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, whose fourth team captain in franchise history he was between 2003 and 2005. His brother Larry was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Steve Rucchin played in his youth at the Frederick Banting Broncos , the ice hockey team of Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School in London in the province of Ontario . When he began studying biology at the University of Western Ontario in 1990 , he also went on the ice for their ice hockey team in the Ontario Universities Athletics Association (OUAA), a division in the game operations of the Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union (CIAU). In the 1994 NHL Supplemental Draft , Rucchin was selected in the first round in second place overall by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim .

The 1994/95 season , which began later due to the strike and he started in the International Hockey League with the San Diego Gulls , but then quickly found his regular place in the NHL. Until 2004 he remained a pillar of the Mighty Ducks, where he played as a center at times in a series with Paul Kariya and Teemu Selänne and came to 67 points scorer in the 1996/97 season . From 2003 he was also the team captain of the Ducks. He had played most of the games for Anaheim when he moved and was second behind Kariya in all of the Ducks' all-time scorer ratings. During the canceled 2004/05 season he took a break from professional ice hockey and did not, like many other players, accept an offer from a team from Europe or a minor league .

In August 2005, Rucchin was given in a barter for Trevor Gillies and a four-round suffrage in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft to the New York Rangers . However, he left the team after a year as a free agent and joined the Atlanta Thrashers . In the 2006/07 season , the attacker missed the last 25 regular season games due to a head injury. In the following season, however, he did not play another game for the Thrashers, as a concussion and its aftermath put him out of action for the entire season. These injuries eventually forced Rucchin to retire.

Rucchin was regarded as a solid two-way center , whose strengths included his good face-off skills and his outnumbered game . As a leading player, the attacker also had above-average passing quality. His not fully developed scorer qualities and injuries in the late autumn of his career were considered a weakness .

International

Rucchin took part with Team Canada in the 1998 World Cup and finished sixth with the team. In six games, the attacker scored three points for his home country.
