Shawn William Bates (born April 3, 1975 in Melrose , Massachusetts ) is an American ice hockey player who has played for the Manchester Monarchs in the American Hockey League since December 2009 .

Career

Bates began his career in the Boston University team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association and was even able to celebrate the championship title there in 1995, where he was also elected to the All-Star team. Immediately after graduating, he moved to the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League , where he stayed for a total of four years and also played some games in the farm team, the Providence Bruins . After he was put on the waiver list, he was signed to the New York Islanders in 2001 . A special moment in his career was a penalty shot in the quarterfinals of the Eastern Conference against the Toronto Maple Leafs when he defeated goalkeeper Curtis Joseph 2:30 minutes before the end of regular time , giving the Islanders 2-2 in the series. However, the series was still lost 3-4.

However, Bates' performance deteriorated in the following years, and in 2008 he was finally put on the waiver list again. He also only played three games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and only made five appearances in the entire 2007/08 season. In 2008 he finally moved to Europe for the first time to the Finnish team HIFK Helsinki , where he showed good performance, but was injured again after only 20 games. During this time he also had to undergo hip surgery, which injured him again. In the summer of 2009 he took part in a training camp run by the Colorado Avalanche , but couldn't convince. At the end of October he was finally signed to a try-out by the Austrian record champions EC KAC to replace the injured Andy Schneider . However, due to insufficient performance, the contract was not extended. Bates only played six games in which he recorded three assists for himself.

In December 2009 he was hired by the Manchester Monarchs .
