Johann Gottlieb Nörrenberg

Johann Gottlieb Christian Nörrenberg (born August 11, 1787 in Pustenbach now Bergneustadt ( North Rhine-Westphalia ), † July 20, 1862 in Stuttgart ) was a German physicist .

Nörrenberg, a son of Wilhelm Nörrenberg and Maria Magdalena geb. Hollmann, came to nearby Gummersbach as a clerk at the age of 14 . Through self-study with the help of a mathematics textbook , he acquired good knowledge in this area, so that in 1812/13 he was able to work as a surveyor for the land survey of Westphalia . From 1822 he was employed in Darmstadt as a professor of mathematics at the Grand Ducal Military Academy .

During a three-year stay in Paris from 1829 to 1832 , he expanded his knowledge of physics and chemistry . In 1833 he took over the chair of physics, mathematics and astronomy at the University of Tübingen as the successor to Johann Gottlieb Friedrich von Bohnenberger , as well as the management of the Tübingen observatory . From then on he dealt with astronomy and optics , constructing observation instruments. A polarization apparatus developed by him became the standard instrument of its time.

Nörrenberg, who was very practical, constructed a wide variety of devices, including a coffee machine . He cut the lenses for his optical instruments himself . Shortly after the publication of the process invented by Daguerre of photographs on silver-plated copper plates (daguerreotype) in August 1839, Nörrenberg took such photographs , one of which is now in the Tübingen City Museum .

He was a member of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors .

After retiring in 1851, he lived in Stuttgart and died there on July 20, 1862.

Spelling of the surname

In many sources, the surname of the physicist is written with “m” instead of “n”, ie “Nörre m berg” instead of “Nörre n berg”. This also applies to sources that were published shortly after the physicist's death.

The entry in the baptismal register of the Evangelical Church Community Wiedenest shows the spelling "Nörrenberg".

In the Czech reference work Ottuv Slovnik Naucny , which was published between 1888 and 1943, it is said that the name "Nörre m berg" was the wrong spelling.
