Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. is a US mining company and the largest manufacturer of iron ore pellets with a 44% market share in the US . The most important customers are ArcelorMittal and, until their merger with Cleveland-Cliffs in December 2019, AK Steel from Ohio .
history
The oldest forerunner, the Cleveland Iron Mining Company, was founded in 1846. In 1891 it merged with the Iron Cliffs Mining Company to form the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company .
After acquiring two coal mines from US Steel , the company renamed itself "Cliffs Natural Resources" in 2008. The coal business was sold in December 2015. In August 2017, the company returned to its current name.
On December 3, 2019, the company announced the merger with its previous major customer AK Steel.

Cliffs operates five iron ore open pit mines in the Great Lakes Region and one in Western Australia .

More mines
In Australia, the Koolyanobbing mine was in operation until mid-2018. 10.1 million tons of iron ore were mined in 2017. It is now owned by the Australian company Mineral Resources Limited
The Canadian business with the Bloom Lake ( Quebec ) and Wabush Scully ( Labrador ) opencast mines north of Sept-Îles was closed in 2014/15. A large chromite project ("Ring of Fire" ) in northern Ontario was put on hold in 2013.
