Saint Louis River basin |
The Saint Louis River is a (without meander ) 309 km long river in the US state of Minnesota .
It rises on the western edge of Lake County and flows into a freshwater estuary between the twin ports of Duluth and Superior in the Superior Bay of the Upper Lake . The largest tributaries are the Whiteface River and Cloquet River .
The uppermost source branch of the Saint Louis River flows as the North River into Seven Beaver Lake . The then initially west-facing upper course connects numerous swampy and boggy depressions, which are occupied by boreal coniferous forest . Then the river gradually swings southwest and meanders through forests that are richer in hardwood. From the village of Floodwood, the Saint Louis River turns east and flows through a rocky narrow valley with numerous rapids and small waterfalls below the town of Cloquet . The steep gradient here is used by five hydropower plants with reservoirs.
In the mid-20th century, the lower reaches of the Saint Louis River was one of the most polluted rivers in Minnesota due to the discharged sewage. It wasn't until the 1970s that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) became aware of the problem. The water quality could slowly be improved again from 1978 onwards by the construction of sewage treatment plants.
The Saint Louis River is considered to be the main source river of the Saint Lawrence River .
