Barbara Kopple (born July 30, 1946 in New York City , New York , USA ) is an American film director and film producer who has received two Oscar awards.

Life

The documentary filmmaker studied clinical psychology at the College of West Virginia . During her studies, Kopple began making documentaries. In 1972 Kopple went to Kentucky to document the miners' strike in Harlan County . Kopple stayed four years and published the documentary Harlan County USA in 1976. The documentary filmed from the perspective of miners and their families was awarded an Oscar in 1977. Kopple's 1990 documentary American Dream about a workers' strike in the food industry has won several awards, including an Oscar for Best Documentary .
