from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cathedral of the Resurrection (French: Cathédrale de la Résurrection d'Évry ) is the episcopal church of the Diocese of Évry-Corbeil-Essonnes in the French city of Évry . The cathedral is dedicated to St. Dedicated to Korbinian von Freising ( St Corbinien ), who was born around 675 in Arpajon in today's diocesan area of Evry. It was the first cathedral to be built in France in over 100 years in the 1990s.

history

In 1966, two years before the establishment of the Essonne department in the Paris agglomeration , the Corbeil-Essonnes diocese with the Corbeil-Essonnes bishopric was established for approximately the same area . The historic collegiate church of Saint-Spire in Corbeil-Essonnes became the episcopal church . Since the diocesan administration established itself in the departmental capital Évry, the diocese was renamed Évry-Corbeil-Essonnes in 1988. At the same time, planning began for a cathedral in Évry.

architecture

The Cathédrale de la Résurrection was built between 1991 and 1995 according to plans by the Swiss architect Mario Botta . Botta chose the basic shape of the circle as a symbol of divine perfection and human community; as the material the brick for the four elements , "made of earth and water, dried in the air and burned in the fire". Two wall rings made of exposed brickwork, loosened up by ornamental stone positions and rows of windows, carry a wreath of 24 silver linden trees on the upper edge, which slopes to the southwest . In the north-east, in front of the highest point of the ring and the large windows of the chancel, a bell tower with five bells and a metal cross grows out of the facade.

The heated black granite floor of the interior with a diameter of 29 m is slightly lower than the level of the surroundings. On both sides it is surrounded by twelve abstract- colored Apostle windows. The altar island is raised by six steps. The marble altar stands on a column that continues into the crypt below with the burial place of the bishops. To the right of the altar is the bishop's cathedra , to the left the baptismal font , in which baptism can be performed by immersion. The octagonal sacrament chapel is located under the main portal .

Visit of Pope John Paul II

Plaque

A plaque in the cathedral commemorates the visit of Pope John Paul II on August 22, 1997 with a quote from his address:

“I share your gratitude to your shepherds, the architect, the builders and the donors who have worked together to erect such a sign in the heart of the New City of Evry - the House of God and the House of Men. It is a gesture of hope, a testimony to the vitality of a community that wanted to express itself in the language of that time, shortly before the start of the new millennium. "
