Jakob Ecker (born February 28, 1851 in Lisdorf , † November 17, 1912 in Trier ) was a German Roman Catholic priest , theologian and publicist from the diocese of Trier .

Live and act

Jakob Ecker attended the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Trier until 1871 and then studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the local seminary . After priestly ordination (1875) and doctorate at the University of Bonn (1879), he taught in Munster as lecturer the Semitic languages . In 1895 he was in Freiburg to Dr. theol. PhD. In 1886 the Trier bishop Michael Felix Korum appointed him professor for Semitica and Old Testament exegesis at the reopened Trier seminary . He was a staunch advocate of anti-Talmudism and an anti-Judaist writer.

Ecker became particularly well-known through several Bible editions , including the first Catholic home Bible of the 20th century, which he had translated from the Vulgate . His school Bible was introduced in the diocese of Trier and five Bavarian dioceses at the beginning of the 20th century and had a pioneering influence on the development of Catholic Bible teaching. It was later adopted by numerous German dioceses and appeared in Germany until 1957; It was illustrated by the well-known painter Philipp Schumacher (1866–1940).

Jakob Ecker developed the library of the episcopal seminary. Its system of ancillary group listing according to 25 subject areas was retained until 1986. In addition to lexicons, reference works and grammars, he himself added text editions of Oriental-Semitic scripts to the extraordinarily extensive subject area “Orientalia”.
