American Dream is an award-winning documentary directed by Barbara Kopple about the industrial action of factory workers in Austin , Minnesota in the 1980s. In 1991 he was awarded the Oscar for best documentary film.
action
The film is about the labor dispute between workers at the food company Hormel in Austin, Minnesota, in 1985 and 1986. Despite a profit of $ 30 million, Hormel decided to cut hourly wages from $ 10.69 to $ 8.25 and cut other social benefits by 30 percent. Local workers' representatives spoke out against the cuts but received no further support from the national union , the United Food and Commercial Workers . The wildcat strike that had been called provoked new conflicts and prompted Governor Rudy Perpich to deploy the National Guard to protect the non-striking workers and the production facilities from the strikers.
For several years, Barbara Kopple observed the factory workers and documented on the one hand the strike for better working conditions and better pay, but on the other hand also the internal trade union conflicts and tried to present the positions of both sides through interviews and press releases.
