Dorado ( doˈɾaðo ) is a village and a municipality on the north coast of Puerto Rico 24 km west of San Juan .
The place was "provided" on November 22, 1842 by Jacinto López Martínez on behalf of the Spanish crown with a governor named Santiago Méndez Vigo and thus became an administrative unit for the first time. Today the municipality consists of 6 barrios (Espinosa, Higuillar, Maguayo, Mameyal, Pueblo [administrative headquarters] and Río Lajas). It belongs to the San Juan – Caguas – Guaynabo metropolitan area.
Mayor is Carlos López Rivera (PNP).
The 38,165 inhabitants (as of 2010) are 74.1% white and Hispanic . The population density in 2010 was 634.4 inhabitants per km² (land area: 60.16 km²).
The main industries are tourism (beach / ocean) and the pharmaceutical industry (especially Boston Scientific , Pfizer and Heraeus ).
The 1976 G7 summit in San Juan took place at the Dorado Beach Resort . The shipwreck SS Antonio López is off the coast, the ship sank in 1898. SS Antonio López Shipwreck Site and Remains is a National Historic Landmark and is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places.
