Scott Rachal Verplank (born July 9, 1964 in Dallas , Texas ) is an American professional golfer with the PGA TOUR .
During his visit to Oklahoma State University in 1985 he won the Western Open as an amateur , a PGA TOUR event - the first since Dough Sanders won the 1956 Canadian Open . Before that, he had won the US Amateur Championship in 1984.
After completing his studies, Verplank became a professional golfer in 1986 . His career was unspectacular but constant. In addition to his five tournament victories on the PGA TOUR , he was called up to the teams of the Ryder Cup in 2002 and 2006 (as captain's pick ) and the Presidents Cup in 2005 and 2007, as well as two appearances for the USA in the WGC World Cup . In the golf world rankings he was in the top 50 for a long time, which promised invitations to the major tournaments.
The diabetic was awarded the Ben Hogan Award by the Golf Writers Association of America in 2002 for his golfing achievements despite a serious illness. He wears an insulin pump that supplies him during the tournament.
Scott Verplank lives in Edmond , Oklahoma with his wife Kim and their four children .
