The FFH area NSG Droste Woy and NSG Westerheide is around 17 hectares and is located in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Wesel between the districts of Flüren and Bislich on the right bank of the Rhine . It is located near the Flürener Old Rhine . As an FFH area, it forms part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas .

The part of the name "NSG" refers to the previously independent nature reserve designations of this area. The two former nature reserves Droste Woy (northern part of the area, approx. 6.5 ha) and Westerheide (southern part of the area, approx. 10.5 ha) were merged in 2009, considerably expanded and renamed Droste Woy, Rheinaue between Wesel and Bislich ; the FFH area lies entirely in this nature reserve. In addition, the area is also in the much larger EU bird sanctuary DE-4203-401 Lower Lower Rhine .

Area description

The area forms a meadow landscape typical of the Lower Rhine lowlands , in which nutrient-rich still waters and softwood meadows are of particular importance. In the FFH area, the Droste Woy is an elongated creek behind a dike on the Rhine , which was created when a dike broke in the 19th century and whose banks in the south and east merge seamlessly into the embankment. The Rhine dike located in the nature reserve is called Postdeich and is considered the oldest dike in the Lower Rhine region.

Flora and fauna

Below the mean water line, the bank at Droste Woy is almost devoid of vegetation, except for a moderately dense stand of fir fronds . The still water is covered with pondweed and similar submerged vegetation, partly also with white water lily . The area is particularly used as a resting place by greenshanks and forest water striders.
