Post dike

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Postdeich is a dike located on the Rhine in Wesel - Bislich . It is considered the oldest existing dike on the Lower Rhine .

geography

The post dike runs around 150 meters from the banks of the Rhine and is located southwest of the village center of Bislich in the area of the Marwick farmers. It begins in the west at the Fährhaus restaurant in the immediate vicinity of the landing stage for the Keer Tröch passenger ferry between Bislich and Xanten . The Postdeich is part of the Droste Woy nature reserve, Rheinaue between Wesel and Bislich and is characterized by a wealth of species, especially in the form of different types of flowers.

history

The post dike was built over 200 years ago. Due to the construction that was common at the time, it mainly consists of bricks that were paved on the slope. It was given the name Postdeich because it was part of a route used by post riders. In 1855 there was a severe flood on the Lower Rhine, in which almost all the existing dykes broke, whereas the post dike withstood. Due to a dike breach elsewhere, Bislich was nevertheless flooded. Because the post dike did not break at the time, it is now the oldest dike on the Lower Rhine, which has remained in its historical form. In 1858 the ancient bronze statue of the Lüttinger Knabe was discovered by Bislicher fishermen in the immediate vicinity of the dike . From today's perspective, the post dike is no longer important for flood protection.
