Frederick "Fred" Funk (born June 4, 1956 in Takoma Park , Maryland ) is an American professional golfer of the PGA TOUR . He is one of the audience favorites at the great North American tournament series.

Funk graduated from the University of Maryland , became a professional golfer in 1981 and taught golf until 1988 before turning to tournament action on the PGA TOUR in 1989 .

He has had eight victories so far, including the 2005 Players Championship with the highest endowment , which Funk shows as the oldest winner in its history. In the career money list he is in 20th place, in the golf world rankings he was around the top 50 for a long time.

Funk played twice for Team USA in the Presidents Cup and once in the Ryder Cup .

Since June 2006 he has been eligible to participate as a senior on the Champions Tour and recorded his first victory there in October, when he competed for the third time. Funk has announced that he will continue to play mainly on the PGA Tour.

His haircuts are among the shorter on the tour, but when it comes to accuracy, Funk almost always leads the statistics ( driving accuracy ).
