Johann Gottfried von Hoyer

Johann Gottfried von Hoyer (born May 9, 1767 in Dresden ; † March 7, 1848 in Halle an der Saale ) was a Prussian major general and military writer .

Life

family

He was the son of the Saxon forest clerk and former major of the pontooners , Karl Gottfried Hoyer (1730–1787) and Christiane Eleonore von Diepow.

He married Luise Wilhelmine Jumpelt (1792–1864) in Dresden in 1835, widowed Dr. Warrior. The marriage resulted in four daughters.

His uncle of the same name, Dr. Johann Gottfried von Hoyer (1726–1802), was director of the artillery school founded in 1766, and was ennobled in 1790 after teaching the prince lessons in artillery science .

Career

He joined the Saxon artillery corps in 1781 and became a junker ibid. In 1787 he was promoted to Sous Lieutenant , took part in the First Coalition and rose to Prime Lieutenant in 1800 . Since 1806, as captain of the Saxon artillery, he was also the commander of the pontoon company. During the Fourth Coalition he took part in the Battle of Jena and in the Fifth Coalition War in the battles near Bornick and Waldheim. He was also present when Schill passed through in Wittenberg . He was then promoted to major in the artillery in 1810 and then to lieutenant colonel in the engineering corps. At the beginning of the Russian campaign , he received his departure from the Saxon service.

Hoyer was then aggregated to the engineer corps in 1813 as a colonel in the Prussian service . He took part in the Wars of Liberation , especially the Battle of Dresden . After he had already received his patent as colonel in 1814 and had received the salary of a regimental commander since 1815 , he became a brigadier of the 1st Infantry Brigade in 1816 . In 1818 he advanced to major general and became senior brigadier of the 1st infantry brigade ad interim, later inspector ibid. In 1825, Hoyer said goodbye, was honored with the service cross and gave lectures on the art of war in Halle an der Saale and wrote numerous articles on military science for the universal lexicon the present and the past , which Heinrich August Pierer published in the 34 volumes of the second edition from 1840 to 1846. Hoyer died in Halle on March 7, 1848.
