Markus Koy

Markus Koy (born July 4,  1974 ) is a German sailor.

Life

Koy, who comes from Wedel , began sailing when he was eight. After graduating from high school, he studied mechanical engineering.

In 2007 he took part in the Louis Vuitton Cup , the qualifying event for the America's Cup , as a mastman in the United Internet Team Germany .

In 2008, the 2.02-meter-tall Koy, who started for the North German Regatta Club from Hamburg, won the European championship in the star boat class together with helmsman Robert Stanjek , in 2010 he repeated this triumph with Johannes Polgar and in 2014 won the third time with Hubert Merkelbach the Starboot European Championship title. In addition, Koy was German champion several times. In February 2011 he and Polgar received the “Team of the Year” award at the Hamburger Sportgala . In 2012 he and Polgar just missed qualifying for the Summer Olympics in London .

In October 2015 Merkelbach and Koy won the Starboat South American Championship.

At the final of the Star Sailors League in 2013, he finished fifth with Polgar, fourth in 2015 and fifth again in 2016. In December 2017, Koy and Philipp Buhl again achieved fifth place at the same event.

He worked as a trainer for the German Sailing Team and, among other things, looked after sailors at the Youth America's Cup. From October 2012 Koy started working for the sail manufacturer North Sails Germany. At times he appeared as a commentator on broadcasts of sailing competitions.
