Simon Hirschland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Simon Hirschland (born November 30, 1807 in Steinheim (Westphalia) ; † June 28, 1885 in Essen ) was a German-Jewish banker and is considered a financier of mining in the Ruhr area . He was the founder of the Simon Hirschland Bank in Essen.

Live and act

Simon Hirschland's father, Salomon Herz Hirschland from Steinheim (Westphalia) , moved to Essen with his seven children as a butcher and dealer after the death of his wife Jüdel Bendix (1778–1815) in 1815. There he also took over the chairmanship of the Jewish community. His son Simon succeeded him in this office. Simons' brother Dr. med. Moses Hirschland was a long-time member of the Essen city council.

Simon Hirschland began his professional career as a businessman in Essen. With the establishment of a private bank in 1841 he also entered the banking business. In the same year he married Marianne Isaac (1814–1895) from Ruhrort . The two oldest children, Hermann (* 1842) and Johanna (* 1843), were born deaf and dumb, which led the parents to found a home for the deaf and dumb. The sons Isaac and Albert (* 1848) followed, both of whom later rose to become successful bankers. Isaac Hirschland successfully continued his father's private bank.

The rise of the Hirschland banking house is closely linked to the growing industrialization of the Ruhr area. His clients in the exchange and loan business included the region's business magnates - Alfred Krupp , Johann Dinnendahl , Wilhelm Theodor Grillo , Mathias Stinnes and Franz Haniel .

Hirschland was the first to be buried in the autumn of 1885 in the Jewish cemetery on Reckhammerweg , adjacent to the old Segeroth cemetery in Essen. The family crypt on the cemetery, which is now a listed building and is not open to the public, still exists today.
