The Burnt Mountain ( English Burnt Mountain ; Afrikaans Verbrande Berg ) is a mountain in Damaraland in northwestern Namibia . The Burned Mountain towers over its surroundings by about 200 meters and is not far from the organ pipes on the D3254 and about 10 kilometers from Twyfelfontein . It has been a Namibian National Monument since September 15, 1956 .
It consists of Doleritschichten which in conjunction with mudstone within the Etendeka - volcanism is associated. It forms part of the Karoo supergroup and is traversed by sandstone channels of the Tsarabis formation and Mudstone of the Huab formation .
The 80-million year old lava flow by heat and pressure metamorphosis arose forms at dusk with his reddish-violet color a great contrast to the 200-million year old beige country rocks of the Karoo - slate .
