Ludwig Friedrich Wilhelm Henk , since 1878 von Henk (born March 4, 1820 in Anklam , † October 17, 1894 in Berlin ) was a German Vice Admiral and a member of the Reichstag .

Life

Ludwig was the son of the ship's captain Johann Daniel Henk and his wife Christiane, née Köpke.

Career

Henk began his career in 1835 on merchant ships , made voyages to Brazil , the Mediterranean and the Black Sea and became a captain in 1844 . After the establishment of the Prussian Navy in 1849, he joined as an auxiliary officer , in 1855 became a lieutenant in the first class and in 1859 a corvette captain .

On May 22, 1861, Henk came to the Ministry of Navy as the Department of Equipment and Hydrography, and on July 27, 1865, he was in command of the steam corvette Nymphe , which was sent to the Mediterranean. Here he had the opportunity to observe the eruption of Santorini , about which he sent reports to the Academy of Sciences in Berlin. During the German War , Henk was in command of the Prussian North Sea Fleet and was appointed captain of the sea on January 26, 1867 . In the Franco-Prussian War he commanded the tank frigate King Wilhelm and after the end of the war became chief of the naval station in the North Sea . On December 4, 1871 is entrusted him with the simultaneous presentation of the character as a rear admiral with the perception of business as director of the Navy Department. At the beginning of 1872 he was finally appointed director of the Admiralty and on March 22, 1872 he received the patent for his rank. In the next three years, Henk was also head of the training squadron several times in this role. He was promoted to Vice Admiral on June 28, 1877, and on May 8, 1878, for his long service by Kaiser Wilhelm I, he was raised to the hereditary Prussian nobility . On July 5, 1879, due to differences with the head of the Admiralty, Albrecht von Stosch , he was put up for disposition .

Between 1890 and 1893, Henk represented the constituency of Ueckermünde - Wolin in the German Reichstag as a member of the German Conservative Party .

Henk died on October 17, 1894 in Berlin and was buried in the Columbiadamm cemetery. The grave site is in field G3.

family

Henk had married Mathilde Ehrhardt (1828-1897) on November 20, 1851 in Stralsund. The marriage had two sons:

  • Otto (1852–1891), imperial corvette captain ⚭ 1886 Luisa Fleitmann (* 1866)
  • Wilhelm (1859–1930), Prussian colonel and commander of the Reserve Infantry Regiment No. 207 in the First World War
