Alfons "Fons" Peeters (born January 21, 1943 in Koersel , Limburg province , † January 5, 2015 in Sint-Truiden ) was a Belgian football player .
Career
society
Peeters started playing football at FC Beringen when he was ten. He made his debut in the first team at the age of 17. In 1962 he rose to the first division with Beringen and managed to stay up. In the following season Beringen was runner-up behind RSC Anderlecht . 1966 Peeters left his home club and moved to R Olympic Charleroi in the second Belgian league . Just a year later he rose to the top division with Charleroi. At the end of the 1967/68 season, the club had to relegate after only one season. Peeters then accepted an offer from RSC Anderlecht. Due to the great competition there and a change of coach, Peeters lost his initial regular place.
In 1970 he was in the final of the Messestädte Cup . In the 3-1 win in the first leg in front of the home crowd against Arsenal , Peeters was substituted on for Anderlecht in the 68th minute when the score was 2-0. Due to a 3-0 defeat in the second leg, in which Peeters was not used, Anderlecht missed the overall victory from two games. In 1971 he went back to the second division for KAA La Gantoise . After three years he said goodbye to professional football and played for lower-class clubs until 1980.
National team
Although he missed relegation at the end of the season with Charleroi, he was called up to the Belgian national team four times in 1967 and 1968 . In 1970 he was in the squad for the World Cup in Mexico , but was not used in any of the three preliminary round games against El Salvador (3-0), the Soviet Union (1: 4) and Mexico (0: 1).
