Hugo Hermannus Hovenkamp (born October 5, 1950 in Groningen , Netherlands ) is a former Dutch football player who was considered one of the best left-backs of his time.

Career

Hovenkamp began his career in his hometown at FC Groningen , where he worked until 1975. He then played at AZ Alkmaar until 1983 , with whom he won the Dutch championship once and the KNVB Cup three times . In 1981 he was also in the final of the UEFA Cup , which was lost to Ipswich Town . After his time at Alkmaar, he went to Austria to play for FC Wacker Innsbruck for two years before finally ending his career.

Between 1977 and 1983 Hovenkamp played 31 international matches for the Dutch national football team , in which he scored two goals. He took part in the 1980 European Football Championship in Italy. This was his only major tournament he played after he sustained a meniscus injury prior to the 1978 World Cup and had to cancel his participation as a result.

Hovenkamp is currently working as a scout for AZ Alkmaar.
