Sheldon Michael Louis Bateau (born January 29, 1991 in Port of Spain ) is a Trinidadian-Tobacco football player who is usually called up in central defense. He has been under contract with the Belgian first division club KV Mechelen since July 2019 and is also part of the Trinidadian national team .

Beginnings in Trinidad and Tobago

Sheldon Bateau began his senior career in his home town of San Juan Jabloteh in 2009 and moved to the North East Stars after three seasons .

KV Mechelen

A few months after moving to the North East Stars , he left the club and joined the Belgian first division club KV Mechelen . He made his debut in the Pro League on October 6, 2012. In the 2-0 defeat by KV Kortrijk , he came on for Mads Junker in the 32nd minute .

On August 24, 2014 Bateau completed his 50th league game for KV. In the 3-0 win against Club Bruges, he completed the full 90 minutes. On September 21, 2014 he scored his first league goal for KV Mechelen when he scored the interim 2-2 equalizer in the 55th minute in the 2-3 defeat against Sporting Lokeren.

Krylya Sovetov Samara

For the 2015/16 season Sheldon Bateau was loaned out by the Russian first division club Krylja Sowetow Samara . In the Premjer League he made his debut on August 29, 2015 in a 3-1 win against Zenit Saint Petersburg . He was substituted on by coach Franky Vercauteren in the 83rd minute for the injured Yohan Mollo . After the loan contract expired, the club decided to sign Bateau.

Kairat Almaty

In 2017, Bateau was loaned from Samara for one season and then firmly committed. During this time, the defender played 39 league games and 7 games in qualifying for the Europa League for the Kazakhs . In 2017 and 2018 he was the national cup winner with the club .

Via Sarpsborg 08 FF back to KV Mechelen

On February 14, 2019, the Norwegian first division team Sarpsborg 08 FF announced the player's commitment. In mid-July 2019 Bateau moved back to Belgium for KV Mechelen , where he signed a three-year contract.

National team

After Sheldon Bateau was already active in the U-20 and U-23 national team of Trinidad and Tobago, he made his debut in the Trinidad-Tobago national football team on February 7, 2013 . In the 2-0 defeat in the friendly against Peru , he was allowed to complete the full 90 minutes.

While he was not nominated for either the 2013 Gold Cup or the 2014 Caribbean Championship, he was nominated for the 2015 Gold Cup by coach Stephen Hart . In the first group game against Guatemala he was able to score his first goal in the national dress when he scored the interim 1-0 lead in the 11th minute in the 3-1 win. With Trinidad and Tobago, he was able to advance to the quarter-finals, where they had to admit defeat Panama on penalties .
