Jaakko Hänninen (born April 16, 1997 in Ruokolahti ) is a Finnish cyclist who competes cross-country and road races .

Athletic career

Jaakko Hänninen grew up on a farm near Ruokolahti; like his big brother and father, he began cycling, initially in cyclo-cross races . Later he trained as a two-wheel mechanic . In the 2012/13 season, Jaakko Hänninen was the Finnish junior champion in cyclo-cross racing, in 2015/16 and 2017/18 national champion of the elite.

From 2015 onwards, Hänninen also increasingly competed on the road and became the Finnish junior champion in individual time trials and road races. In 2017 he won the national title of road champion in the U23 category and took second place in the elite race. In the same year he moved to France and started there for an amateur club. In September 2018 he won the Tour du Gévaudan Occitanie and a few days later the bronze medal in the U23 road race at the road world championships. He was the only Finn in the field; it was 16 years ago that a male athlete from Finland ( Jukka Vastaranta ) had won a medal at road world championships.

In May 2019, Hänninen contested a race in France in which he was hit by a derny . He suffered a fracture in his sternum and was sidelined for six weeks. On August 1st he received a contract with the Ag2r La Mondiale team .
