Giro della Toscana Femminile

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Giro della Toscana Femminile - Memorial Michela Fanini has been held as a stage race in women's cycling since 1995 .

In the first year, two separately rated stages were driven. The race was organized by her father Brunello Fanini in honor of the Italian cyclist Michela Fanini . Michela Fanini won the Giro d'Italia Femminile in 1994 and had a fatal accident in the same year. The race takes place annually in September. It belongs to mostly UCI category 2.1, in 2013 to category 2.HC.

The 2013 edition ended with a protest from the majority of the female drivers. 63 of the 112 remaining participants refused to start the last stage, including the overall leader Marianne Vos , after the organizer Brunello Fanini did not take safety concerns seriously, in particular because of the lack of protection from road traffic from the athletes' point of view. A disciplinary procedure initiated by Fanini against three Italian participants in the protest, the two-time world champion Giorgia Bronzini , the former Italian champion Noemi Cantele and the spokeswoman for the Italian drivers' association ACCPI, Elisa Longo Borghini , was closed in December 2013 by the Italian cycling federation FCI. Fanini had threatened that the race would no longer be held in the event of a strike.
