The Wertwiesenpark is a 15 hectare park in Heilbronn between the city center and the district of Sontheim , on whose boundary it is located.

history

On the occasion of the 1985 State Horticultural Show in Baden-Württemberg, the park was laid out on arable and grave land from 1982 onwards. The aim of the design measures was to keep the Neckaraue as a green area close to the city free of buildings and to enhance the value of the surrounding districts with the layout of the park. The garden show, which opened on May 24, 1985, featured around 1,500 individual events over 108 days and attracted around one million visitors, is considered an outstanding event in Heilbronn in the 1980s. Together with the garden show area, a sports area with two grass pitches and a hard court was also built on the Wertwiesen south of the park in 1985, which was rented to the Heilbronner Spielvereinigung 07 .

description

The Wertwiesenpark is used extensively because the park is well connected to the city center and offers many leisure opportunities. There are two large playgrounds and paths for walking or jogging on the banks of the Neckar . There are three playgrounds for children: two playgrounds at the southern and northern entrances and a water playground. There is a halfpipe for the youth and there is also a festival area with a stage at the northern exit to the Neckarhalde. In the north-west of the park there is a kiosk and a mini golf course . To the north of the park is the Neckarhalde open-air swimming pool operated by Heilbronner Stadtwerke . The open spaces of the park, sports facilities and outdoor pool form a green zone around one kilometer long on the right bank of the Neckar.

There is a herbaceous wave for botany fans . This is a perennial area with around 13,000 plants . The fragrance garden and the grass garden can also be admired, these were created in 2004 with the rose garden.

Sculptures

In the Wertwiesenpark there are several modern sculptures, the stone sculpture Cosmic Connection I by Ottmar Mohring , the steel sculpture Heilbronner Stück by Bernd Hennig , the tower by Jo Schöpfer and the two obelisks Romea and Julio by Rolf Bodenseh . All sculptures were created in the 1985 garden show year. At the state horticultural show, Heilbronn presented itself as a sculpture city with an approximately two-kilometer-long sculpture avenue with 74 exhibits that led from the city center to the garden show grounds. Some of the works that were displayed or created during a sculpture symposium were later bought by the city of Heilbronn.
