Ottmar Mohring (born February 22, 1935 in Stuttgart ; † June 7, 2015 in Stuttgart ) was a German sculptor .

biography

Ottmar Mohring was born as the third child of a machinist. At his mother's request, Mohring also began an apprenticeship as a locksmith in 1949 , but broke it off after four months in order to complete a three-year apprenticeship as a stonemason in the Lauster company in Stuttgart-Münster by 1952 , supplemented by private training with the sculptor Gustav Wallkamp . After completing his training, he tried in vain to find work in Zurich. Back in Stuttgart, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts under Professor Karl Hils for a semester . Since Mohring felt constricted in the academy, he emigrated to the USA in 1954.

There he traveled extensively and worked in various professions before moving to New York City in 1959 . At the Dazzle Company he was trained as a Sign & Pictorial Painter and was in contact with the sculptor Alexander Archipenko . In 1961 he worked for three months in Paris, then for several months in Bamberg , before he was again in New York City from 1963 to 1968. In 1968 he returned to Germany and settled in Stuttgart-Mühlhausen. He remained connected to the USA through several longer stays in the following years.

Ottmar Mohring has been working as a freelance artist since the end of the Stuttgart Academy period.

Works

His central works include the first stone sculpture Figure VIII , created from 1963 to 1968 after initially clay, bronze and plaster work, as well as the stone sculpture Vegetative I from 1969, the shape of which is considered to be the prototype of numerous later works with an oval basic shape as well as various notches and surface treatments. In the Vegetative series , over 20 sculptures were created by 1974, while the Cosmic series, which is similar in basic composition , produced almost 40 more such sculptures between 1974 and 1983. In addition to sculpting, Mohring's work also includes painting, etchings and drawings.

Mohring's stone objects were set up as art in public spaces in numerous places, for example in Bonn , Stuttgart , Heilbronn and Güglingen . Since 1958, his works have been shown in solo and group exhibitions. A comprehensive retrospective with works from 30 years (“Works 1953–1983”) was in the municipal museums in Heilbronn in 1983, a retrospective of his paintings (“Paintings 1956–1986”) was in 1986 in the Baden-Württembergische Bank Heilbronn, another comprehensive retrospective (“Sculptures, Drawings, Etchings, 1953–1989”) was on view in 1989 at Stuttgart Central Station .
